Brides of Destruction – Here
Come The Brides
Sanctuary Records – Release date: March 9, 2004
If an album had a human face, Brides of Destruction debut Here
Come The Brides would be sneering at you – but simultaneously
grinning mischievously and inviting you in.
Made up of founding Motley Crue member and bassist Nikki Sixx,
L.A. Guns guitarist, and founder not only of L.A. Guns, but
also Guns N’ Roses, Tracii Guns, and by contrast to their
two partners, newcomers vocalist London LeGrand and Scot Coogan
on drums.
Here Come The Brides is a 9-song reminder of what rock was
before grunge came along and made music depressing...but with
a twist of today. With the same level of intensity as Motley
Crue and L.A. Guns when they were both first on the scene, Sixx
and Guns, now both in their 40’s prove that not only have
they not mellowed over the years, but that they can kick the
asses of bands half their age.
London LeGrand’s vocal style expertly suits the raunchy
and in-your-face attitude of these songs. The opening cut on
the disc, “Shut The Fuck Up,” is everything it’s
title suggests. It’s fast and harsh like a surprise uppercut,
and an anthem in the making.
Other highlights of the album include:
“I Don’t Care” and “2X Dead”
where LeGrand’s vocals on each of these songs are simply
larger than life and without the falsetto whininess that Vince
Neil tended to exude.
“I Got A Gun” with its cryptic though melodic rock
feel to it.
“Natural Born Killers” is infectious and achingly
catchy.
And then there’s “Life” sung by drummer Scot
Coogan. Coogan’s singing style is crisp and almost pure
by contrast to LeGrand’s, but the transition is natural
when switching gears for the song. Surprisingly, LeGrand and
Coogan harmonize really well together, it’s kind of like
discovering that leather and silk really can go together after
all.
The ending track, “Only Get So Far” is the token
rock ballad on the disc. A gentle and heartfelt track that’s
nice, but the album could have survived just as well without
it.
On Here Come The Brides, Brides of Destruction have created
the perfect counterpoise of the raw energy and feel that created
a rock and roll movement along with a newness that is distinct
and neoteric all at the same time.
