lostprophets - Start Something Columbia Records 2003

How does an established group of 6 determined Welch lads overcome the slap of being labeled the "next best thing" by a slew of aging metal magazines? Lostprophets fly in the face of fashion and under the guide of producer Eric Valentine (Queens of the Stone Age, Good Charlotte) to speed away from the often over used nu-metal moniker. Living up to the 2001 predictions of Best New Metal Band, Ian watkins, Mike Lewis, Jamie Oliver, Lee Gaze, Stuart Richardson and Mike Chiplin have returned with 12 new songs on Start Something.

Instead of getting caught in the undertow of touring with Ozzfest in 2001, Lostprophets returned to the U. K. to be lambasted with reviews claiming they were "too-good-looking" and even worse a "nu-metal boy band". Deciding to return to their basement studio in Pontypridd (also home to none other than Mr. What's New Pussycat, Tom Jones) where they recorded their "demo" thefakesoundofprogress, they began crafting an inspired response with Start Something. They have toured with the likes of Glassjaw, Deftones, Linkin Park and returned to play Ozzfest 2002. The band decided to revolt against the ill-fated nu-metal moniker that so many bands have accepted. Lead singer Ian Watkins explains, "We're not a post-hardcore band, we're not a nu-metal band, we're not interested in proving anything to anybody. We just want to make music we like."

Start Something is an unapologetic reflection of the bands mixed bag of influences. They stir up influential sounds of Duran Duran and The Police just as you think they are riffing on some heavy Faith No More. The first single, "Last Train Home" has received a warm welcome from modern rock radio and their Los Angeles friends at KROQ. On Start Something some of the more mellow, introspective tunes like "Sway" hint at the evolution of their sound. No more apologies, no more labels, Lostprophets have returned to re-define their sound with the solid, coherent collection in Start Something.
