Orgy DVD review

By Nicole Schuman

An ideal remake of the legendary “Blue Monday” and lots of eyeliner started it all.

In the latest round of greatest-hits musical DVD releases, Orgy returns with “Trans Global Spectacle,” featuring home-movies, performances and music videos from 1997 to 2004. Seven years of Orgy. Oy.

If you are a DVD feature-head, and an Orgy fan, you’ll love this DVD. There are plenty of extras including four remixes of the single, “Pure,” as well as videos for “Blue Monday,” “Stitches,” “Fiction,” and “Vague.”

It’s interesting to watch the development of a mid-level industrial band, age in the fast-paced world of rock and roll. The video begins with lots of behind-the-scenes footage of the group fucking around in a cabin in Lake Tahoe, through the grainy, gothtacular lens of a home camera. The DVD progresses through the tours and video creations of the albums “CandyAss,” “Vapor Transmission,” and “Punk Static Paranoia.” There are a lot of naked asses, beer bottles and the like. The hijinx are kind of like a stylish frat mafia, with all the makeup and glitter and tight vinyl pants and spitting and swearing.

Sigh. Ah the industry--I mean--industrial music.

The music reflects much of the space-metal introductions of the late nineties when bands like Prodigy and Nine Inch Nails ignited the airwaves. The music is of interest and did contribute to a progressive era in the developing niche of hybrid electronic music. Sadly, these guys try too hard; creating this faux glam anarchy, with fashion and merchandising, when they are all just overstyled dorks.

In the end, the music and its style do not really evolve. It kind of regresses to a simpler, more modern rock-sound, with less synth noise than the beginning which takes away from the heart of the band. Orgy is at its best in its youth, on its first album. This truly is a visual band, and for at least that reason, a DVD works.
